On sunday I took my kids out to my dads and we made maple syrup. I remember doing this every year as a kid and it was pretty neat to see my own kid enjoying this process as much as I had.

My dad has about 6 trees tapped with a few buckets on each tree.

here is Sauce jr will a bucket, ready to collect the tree sap.

my dad has built a special outdoor wood stove to cook down the sap and turn it into syrup. This takes quite a few hours and the fire has to be kept hot the entire time, which means putting wood on the fire every 20 minutes. In this picture it is about 10 pm and we are getting ready to bring the almost-syrup into the house to finish it off on the stove.

the finished product!

ooh yummy!

we used to do this every winter at BD's parent's place, before his dad passed away and his mom sold their farm. i loved just sitting there, watching the sap bubble away. what a treat for sauce, jr, to make syrup with his grandfather.

Fourth that!!

Shit my dad is afraid to hold my kids I swear!! I couldn't even imagine him with a baby in arms let alone a baby in a carrier!

Incidentally this is the shit I dreamed about as a kid.. Family doing stuff together. Wow it just boggles the mind for me.

It's been a great year

for sap runs hasn't it? DH was just lamenting that he can't find any of our taps. Yummo, homemade syrup, with that whiff of smokiness in it. Thanks for sharing.
