I hurt my back at clinical last night wrangling an 110 lb 77 y/o lady who needed total care and am wondering... because I do not take narcotics unless I am IN surgery and it is KILLING me... do you get a massage right away or will that aggravate the injury? should I see a chiropractor? Accupuncture? Really I have never had it hurt quite like this and I want some relief.......
(why oh why did I not get some help in lifting her and why did I not raise that damn bed like I ALWAYS did EVERY other time before????)

Most of them have massage therapists that work for them and so you can probably get both things taken care of while you're there. I've been to some real quacks in town, and it's hard to find someone you trust. I highly recommend Dr. Khalsa on 50th and Hawthorne. He is an amazing person. He's won awards in town for all the work he does with kids, and he's a yoga instructor too. He'll give you exercises to do that will help strengthen your back afterwards. He also doesn't charge a ton of money like some of the others...it's 55 bucks an hour and he takes insurance. He doesn't do x-rays because he's good enough to feel it out and see what's wrong, so you won't have to pay that either. Here's his contact info:

I'm sure you can get an appointment today. They are really good about it.

i second seeing a chiropractor, they can do wonders. but it really depends on the nature of injury. i have chronic back/hip pain from fractured vertabrae and chiropractic methods are too risky/more likely to aggrevate my injury. so i go to an osteopath who works in a similar, yet much more gentle manner in effort to re-align me and get my body to heal itself.
can you take some ibuprofin in the meantime, just to manage the pain?
I think a massage and then a chiro appointment; the massage would loosen your muscles up totally and then the chiro can put everything back in place. And yeah raise the bed high, put a knee up on the bed for turns. You can use the bottom sheet/pad for helping to turn a client towards you next time if you're alone. Keep your back straight.
sometimes when you're busy it seems easier to just do it alone, but look for help. Accupunture might help you in the long run too. I think all three, but that might get expensive. Where i go to nursing school in british columbia we are not covered for injuries by WCB if we don't follow the guidlines learned in first semester about body mechanics. Careful, there's only one you:)
