Crafty Mamas, DH brought home these ugly tables
What can I do with them? They were by a dumpster. Why he does this? I don't know. He's psyched b/c they open to storage. What can I do to make these lass ugly on the cheap? He says that look retro and royal. WTF? They look like they belong in a cheesy, cheaters' motel.

I see each line being painted a different day-glo color. Psychedelic purple and orange and yellow. That'd be 'royal' alright!
Hammy has some pretty cheesy taste, too (don't tell him I said that or we'll get in, yet another, argument over who's taste is better).
If you get a couple of round table cloths, you could store stuff in 'em and J-man would never be the wiser!
they do look kind of big, but if you need em, paint em cool colors and replace the hardware?...
"this, too, shall pass."
It totally depends on your taste. I'd integrate them with your colour scheme by DEFINITELY painting them (stripping them and re-staining wouldn't be a bad idea, but stripping that would be a nightmare, and it's too much hassle, probably.) Definitely replace that nasty hardware. The border has some cool geometrics in it; if it weren't that trashy, nasty brown, it wouldn't be so ugly.

they kept all their photo albums in it. I think its alright.
Paint the hardware, that's all I would do.

I have the matching record player and speaker set! The speakers have red velvet insets for that extra classy touch. My husband dragged them home recently from a dumpster outrside a house that was up for sale claiming how "useful" they may be. I am in the same quandry. while they are clearly retro and royal, Mine look particularly nice out in the garage next to old paint cans, a pile of cigarette butts and fire wood. I'll be watching to see what all these crafty gals think of.... maybe I'll take their hints too, I mean, they really could be quite cool with a bit of work right? They probably did come from a cheaters hotel ( was there a gideon bible tucked in there)... I once bought some furniture fom one that was going outta business. It was all hideous, we finally decided to paint it all blue & stencil monkeys all over it in gold. It was ugly but it all matched and was somehow whimsical. It is also long gone and given away.
Because i think it would look a lot better if it was refinished and maybe if you put some different hardware on it. This piece may suprise you!
white paint these, then gently sand edges for a shabby chic look. super easy, cheap and i bet these will look really cool in white. my husband used to bring junk home too. i hate clutter and junk and it drove me nuts... it is some primordial urge that men have, i think.
My MIL has those flanking her couch!
I don't know how much luck you'd have painting them - they're laminate, right? Try some liquid sand first, then a gooey enamel. I'd take off those brass doodads, too. Everytime I'm at MIL's I find myself mesmerized by those handles.

Where they painted wood paneled walls in monocromatic color schemes. It was absolutely beautiful, all different greens, so at every height in the design, there was a new shade, KWIM? That would probably look nice, and some new hardware. Also depending on the height maybe upholster the tops, make stools
