so it happened....i just closed the front door as my first-born child drove away all dressed up for her 1st formal dance with her first real boyfriend

sigh

she is such a pill -- to get her into the nice dress and to get her hair done and some {I MEAN a teeny bit of} blush and eyeshadow i almost lost my mind

don't get me started on her shoes!!!

i just needed some empathy from da mamas as i prepare to wait for 1 am when she gets brought back from the dance way down at the harbour at the House of Blues

****************
My daughter draws designs; geometric type designs and colours them in with coloured pencils. To personalize the dress she doesn’t even like (1st sigh about teens), that luckily an irl mama friend gave her that fits like a glove and is stunning on its own with a slight slit and a nice lace up back (chic all the way), we beaded and embroidered one of her designs onto the hem. I also added part of another as a motif to the neckline. I spent a good part of today beading a blue rose for her boyfriend as they had slacked on the flowers, (2nd sigh) while she finished the dress hem.

I have to interrupt to say that The Father of the Bride was on while we did all of this today.

We piled her hair high in twisty curlers and she had a great tousled look that she wanted to ruin with a huge ponytail in a BIG OLD elastic (sigh). I had to find a teeny tiny band and created a much less harsh dainty braid pulling back the hair she wanted. Very quickly and deftly I managed to exchange some classy and colour-coordinated jewelry for the black YARN things she calls bracelets. (SUPER SIGH) The design on the dress was done in blues and greens to match her SANDALS! (superduper sigh-a-rama) whatever. I actually chose the design of hers that I did as it kinda has a Roman style feel so the sandals aren't a huge jump. (Yeah, just keep telling myself that) One bracelet was in the same greens, echoing that "theme" and the other in blues the beads used in the dress and blue rose. I used some hematite so I put my hematite necklace on her even though she preferred some black yarn chain, which I had hidden earlier, when she took it off to get her hair done.

Didja know that those freaking tuxes do not have real buttonholes?? I had to go find a safety pin and attach his flower while she whined about life. She took a green fun fur shawl/wrap I had crocheted to wear during the dance as she has issues about the back-less-ness of the dress and my black velvet opera cloak as it would be very cold when they came home.

Her date's dad took pictures and they drove off to meet their friends for dinner along Coast Highway 101 with an ocean view. I came back inside to piles of stuff from our preparations in time to watch the wedding in the movie and Steve Martin get all emotional about his daughter being all grown up and leaving him to be an adult. (Okie, okie, soo sappy I know, but c'mon!!!!)

So, now she is going to her 1st dinner date at a very nice place and then another friend's father will drive them to the dance. The dance begins at 8 and is over at midnight. I imagine they'll be home by 1 am.
Who wants a glass of wine while I deal with this???

he he,

I'm still a sandal wearing gal myself, so I understand! At least there's no snow in CA!!! I wore sandals to a winter formal in WI once...good thing my mom wasn't around.

good work mama!

i know she looked amazing - you put so much work into her dress, and helping out her date was the bonus! this is what the teenage years is all about! my son is 16, and very cute - he dresses in "gangsta/hip hop" style clothes and loves to douse himself in to much colonge he goes out!

be proud lady - you did good!

love,

we are all at odds over her manner of dress

her date's step-mother even commented on the fact that this was the 1st time they ever saw her hair (she ALWASY has on soem dumb trucker hat!)
