at what point does it become dating?

So, the DCE (dancing civil engineer) and I have had 4 dance lessons, and one practice. We've had dinner three times (the last time was at his house, he BBQed and I brought the salad). He asked me to go clubbing tonight (what am I going to wear?! what am I going to wear?!), at a place where they play 80's music. We talk or e-mail every other day. We've made out a couple times (somewhat hindered by my cold, waaaa!), and have started to talk about our families.
Folks, I have never done the dating thing. I've hopped into bed with my share of dudes, but not this--I think it's pretty normal--get to know someone over a period of time, thing. I'm enjoying it, but I am totally at a loss for what to do.
My DD15 gives me pointers, can you believe that? Sure, I can tell her everything she wants to know about condoms, but I don't have a lot to offer in terms of building a relationship with someone. It's kinda sad. My mom didn't date, and didn't offer any advice, but I think she's bipolar or has some other functional problem, anyway.
I don't mind this going slow thing. It's nice not to have to turn my entire world upside down on account of some man, cuz boy are they dorky! But I don't have any points of reference to rely on. Like, "yes, this is how it's supposed to be" or "red light! red light!". I just feel like I've been plunged into a void.

I know what you mean. I'd

I know what you mean.

I'd say you're definately "dating"...the question is more, when does it become a boyfriend/girlfriend thing? After sex? After "I love you"? After "the talk"?

Sounds like you're well on your way. Proceed with caution. Wink ;)

"the talk"?

what talk? is that the what-form-of-contraception-do-you-use talk? (I hope that one happens before sex) Is that the where-the-hell-is-this-going talk? Knowing myself, pretty much the moment I have sex with someone is the time when I feel like it's SOMETHING. I've made the mistake of NOT having the where-the-hell-is-this-going talk before having sex--only to find that the minute sex happens, dude leaves. So, I think that talk might have to happen before sex, too. I mean, of course, before sex with him. I know where it's going when I have sex with myself!

Yeah, I'd say "the talk" is the where-the-hell-is-this-going-talk, or as I like to phrase it, "So, are we like boyfriend/girlfriend?" Smile

"red flags are red flags"

the above is the only thing I would be concerned about as long as we don't lie to ourselves about when guys are being jerks then its cool.dating is weird but its a way to know someone before getting attached and possibly hurt and everyone has their own rules about it. To me it becomes dating when it turns to kissing and intimacy, if i have sex with someone it's serious because I refuse to do NSA sex.
A great book on the subject for women who have been hurt is "Why Men Love bitches" it is an amazing read and goes over why guys are so great in the beginning and then get feet of clay.
Just don't be afraid to gently say WHAT YOU WANT if you are concerned. Mainly it takes about four or five months to really see where things are going to go and who he is...HAVE FUN!!! Smile
