but although I taught myself to knt and I even (through the help of an elderly woman at the library knitters group) corrected my bad technique and learned how to purl I cannot figure out how to crochet beyond making a chain. and I want to make these:
they are hyperbolic planes. yes I am that much of a nerd. I read about it in my science journal that I subscribe to and am facinated

They look as if they are the same technique as if you make little roses, at least the first two.
It shouldn't be too hard, but I could explain myself only in german crochetwise, but I usually do my stuff just by 'trial and error' with the picture next to me ... sorry for not being a lot of help, they look pretty cool

The hyperbolic plane is not supposed to be too hard it is esentially n+1
the lorenz manifold is PAGES of instructions and is really difficult, something that you have to pay a lot of attention to when you are making it to make the correct stitches in the correct places
