curtains flambe
So, DD15 called me at work yesterday and told me that she had set the kitchen on fire. Not to worry--she and DD12 are OKAY!! She was frying something, and the oil caught on fire. She moved the pan off the stove, and put it in the sink. The flames didn't go out (and she DID think about putting flour on the fire, to smother the flames, but she thought the flour would catch on fire.) So, she turned on the water, and, of course, there was a fireball that destroyed my curtains, and the cacti in the window, and peeled the paint.
But, she ducked, and somehow still managed to get the fire out, called 911 (and got put on hold), and then called me.
With the information that she had, she certainly did everything correctly. I have no complaints. She was brave and clear headed--even yelled at DD12 twelve who had a screaming panic attack, and told her to take the dog outside and get out of her way!
Of course, there will be no frying for a while, and the three of us have been reviewing the fire triangle, and ABC fires. I bought a fire extinguisher (which may have just sprayed the fire all over the place had she used it incorrectly, so we're going to have some training on that), and the fix-it guy for the building installed 4 smoke detectors.
I spent about 4 hours cleaning the smoke stuff off the ceiling and cabinets (hurray for the flat-head mop and dance music station), and now, we're going to repaint. It's a good reason to, and I didn't really care for the color I had on the backsplash (brick red). And the cabinets have needed painting for a good while.
On top of that, I took DD15 to get acupuncture today. The Bell's Palsy has gotten a little worse since we went Kaiser. The acupuncturist told us it was a good idea to have brought her in early (a week or less after onset is good), and said it would probably only take 3 sessions. At $80 a pop, because Kaiser via Healthy Families doesn't cover that. Whatever. I love my daughter. I am very proud of her, and I don't want her to suffer.
you're all lucky, that could have gone badly. 15's pretty smart.
i bet accupuncture is good for bell's palsey. this was her first treatment?

The flour probably would have done the same thing--flour is totally flamable when suspended in air like that...and can make a fire-ball.
Baking soda or a pot-lid are the way to go.
There's my PSA for the day.
Good for her, handling the fire so well!
Good for you, too, getting her to the acupuncturist quickly!

Yeh, first ever. She and I were chuckling about how exciting her "what I did on my Xmas vacation" essay will be. "I set my house on fire. I can't feel half of my face, and I keep drooling. I had needles stuck in me and I got electrocuted. And I got 11 pairs of socks for Xmas."
