More on economic disparity and snobbyness
oops double post
just ranting. just hating mcmansions today and wishing that poor people had enough to eat and a sense of security and a solid roof over their heads no matter what...seems completely absurd that we can't manage that when 5% own 95% of the wealth. ok, done.
I feel the same way.
at least once a week i'm convinced it's time to move to sweden or denmark or iceland, were there is a safety net that actually functions to keep the general population above the poverty level. of course that means paying upwards of 50-60% in income taxes, but i'm totally cool with that.
"But they pay ____% in taxes," and I reply that I pay a huge amount here too, and get nothing for it. If you add in my health insurance, child care costs, tuition, etc that is covered in these countries, it would totally even out.
I just need to deal with all the darkness and Swedish-talking, and I may move to Sweden.

I live in Ireland. I used to live in Washington state. I've been poor in both places. It doesn't have to be 50 % to 60 % tax to have a decent system. Here you pay 25 % on the first 32,000 euro (approx 38,000 dollars) you earn per year and 41% on the rest and our welfare system is pretty good (although it has its faults).
I think about this all the time, too. The downside of capitalism.
