Fish oil and kids
My SO's son, age 4 and a half, has been having some behavioral problems at school recently. We were talking to our therapist about it today and he recommended fish oil supplements as something that could possibly help to reduce anxiety and heighten his mood. Anyone have any experience/success giving fish oil supplements to their kids? If so, any thoughts on the best form in which to administer it/dosage/etc.?
They are a food, so we are not talking miniscule dosages for effectiveness. If you can use omega 3 eggs, salmon, tuna, and other food sources, that may help. Also, there are some good quality supplements.
Carlson has some great fish oils, including flavored liquids and flavored pop-able softgels.
Here are some other good companies you can research online, with quality products in forms you can give to a child: Coromega and Nordic Naturals
You don't want to get a cheap fish oil. They can be rancid and may contain mercury or other heavy metals.

Both boys love them and would devour them like candy. I've also acquired a taste for them. They are damn good. As for it really changing school behavior? I don't know. I didn't notice significant improvement in Tony's behavior until either he had a good teacher or was homeschooled, so for the root of the problem I would look at the school first, then the boy. But Nordic Naturals are great and I'd feel guilty if I didn't have the boys eat them.

I second Velma on the nordic naturals. good good stuff.

This is what I bought at Whole Foods when someone reccomended the fish oil for my hyper ds. He took it for a few days and I even tried to make a salad dressing with it (disgusting) but I don't know why we stopped doing it. Too much for me to remember I guess. They reccomend this for kids with ADD and if you are a vegetarian (as my ds is) you don't get much Omega 3 since it's usually only in fish. You can also add flax seeds to his food to enhance it, it's good for the whole family too. I feel like crap now because we never stuck with it, but thanks for reminding me.
It is seriously hard to remember, let alone pay for, supplements. Dha Juniors by Nordic Naturals might be so tasty you'd remember, though.

2 tbsp flax powder + 3 tbsp water=1 egg
sneaky! You can also blend the flaxseed oil into a rice "milk" shake (or a real milk shake) I do it all the time, it's so tasty & you can't taste the oil.

I agree that the school needs to be looked at. It is very strange to everyone involved that the ONLY place this kid has major behavioral issues is at school. Not at our house, not at his mom's house, not with his grandparents, nothing. I've never seen him hit another kid. I've only seen him throw an inconsolable "tantrum" (not sure if that's the right word for a four year old) once, and it was right after we moved into our new house--lots of changes going on.
Anyhoo, thanks for the advice!
