Dan Savage? I think

I'm pretty sure it was on Dan Savage's website. Two years ago he posted a bunch of photos of Halloween costumes for kiddies that was darkly playing on current world events. Nancy Reagan at Reagan's funeral and such. Extra dark black humor. I think someone on HM posted a link here with all the costumes, so I'm going to go do a search for that.

I just did a google image

I just did a google image search on 'kid halloween costume' (my indecisive son is still having trouble with his costume) and this was on the first page. I don't know who Dan Savage is, but I really don't think this is funny.

Googled it, and found the Dan Savage feature

Dan Savage is a humorist and writer who writes a syndicated column (Savage Love) that is published in a lot of alternative weeklies. He has also published several books.

I think that the costumes are kind of along the line of humor on the Daily Show, except blacker.

I think the original intent is lost in translation

I first saw this in the wake of these events in the context of the entire piece by a liberal humorist, rather than an isolated image two years later, so my first reaction was grounded in an entirely different basis. But, even at that time, it required a certain mind-set to see any irony in it.

plus i guess it would be

plus i guess it would be really offensive if we thought the guy really wanted kids to dress up this way, but I don't think that was it.i mean aside from the humor.

I actually see the article

I actually see the article as a statement against the war in Iraq, among other things like shady electoral practices. It's using humor to show just how fucked up the situation in this country is.

plus

At the time this was printed, the Republicans were in control of everything, and the majority of the public still supported the Bush administration and the war. This was 2004: Prisoner abuse? "Oh, no biggie; that's just frat house behavior." Remembrance of Reagan? "Oh, he was a SAINT. Everybody LOVED him." Shady electoral practices? "Quiet now, you're just a paranoid flake flouting ca-raaa-zy conspriracy theories."

This joke is on the neo-cons in power who treated the American public like children, and brushed all of these grave issues off as if they were just silly or trivial. It skewers the powerful and spins their words and world around. It's a dark satire befitting bleak times.

This quote makes his intention pretty clear:

"As an added bonus this easy-to-make costume will remind everyone on your child's trick-or-treat route of our national shame!"

Is someone really selling

Is someone really selling this costume? Because I've seen it as a joke- as in the Dan Savage article, which I thought was hysterical. Maybe my sense of humor is just really twisted.
So as a satyrical article for adults, funny. But as an actual costume for children- fucked up so I hope that's not the case here.

I don't think it's being

I don't think it's being sold. Black Sheep pointed out that it was from the Dan Savage article, and in that context it's more understandable I guess.
When I found it it was in a google image search I did for kids halloween costumes, so I was pretty disgusted.

I know I suck

What is it?

**EDIT**

HELP ME! WHAT IS IT?!

***the United States is one of only four out of 168 countries studied to not have some form of paid family leave for new moms. We join Swaziland, Papua New Guinea, and Lesotho in not having that policy in place. ***
