Poll: Do you leave your lights on during winter days? I'm not really prone to depression, but a dark house on those short, dark winter days can get to me. I feel bad about wasting energy, but I need light!

Just wondering, because it's getting pretty cold here (in the 30's today) and I just turned the overhead lights on and felt guilty about it. I sure wish I had a fireplace.

yep i do

i leave a hall light and this lamp we've got in our living room on; the light keeps my mood from getting too terrible.I also have a couple of blank votive candles I keep lit; I find the natural light comforting. I wish i had a fireplace too.No electricity expenditure but warmth and soothing light.Smile

i burn lots of candles

scandanavians swear by using lots of candles during long dark winters. good for the soul. i've been doing this since i heard about it and i feel like it really makes a difference.

i'll also turn on a couple of lights with full-spectrum lightbulbs as needed in the area i'm in, like the kitchen if i'm cooking, over my desk if i'm writing. the full spectrum really helps counteract seasonal depression.

i like darkness. I love

i like darkness. I love overcast, grey and dreary. Suits me i suppose. Sunlight to me is so bright and invasive.

I leave some lights on

but all of our lights are compact fluorescents, so they only use 20-25% of the energy that incandescents do. I also light a lot of candles.

Depends on the room

Some of our rooms get great light in the winter, others don't. I like the candle idea...I think DD is over her fire obsession so I can burn them with abandon.

Lordy, it's 84 here today!

Although it is suppose to drop into the 60's next week. I'm a utility freak so I'm always turning off lights. I would say if it's in the room your hanging then burn them away, but turn off all the other rooms. I also (yes, it does get dark and dreary/wet here to eventually) like candles and OPEN the windows for some fresh air. Granted 30 degrees may be kinda chilly, but I find for me, the closed doors and windows get to me. all my windows are east facing so when the sun hangs low in the winter it's pretty damn dark in my house. we added a bedroom (we only had one) and the one thing I insisted on was BIG WINOWS and a skylight! It's my one brightroom!

Come on out to L.A. for a visit when it gets too cold/dark!

Oh, yes, christmas lights!

Oh, yes, christmas lights! I don't have the same darkness issues when the christmas lights are out. We put our tree/decorations up the day after thanksgiving and leave them up until New Years. If fact, we have a few halloween lights (blacklight) out on the porch right now.

YES! I second the twinkly lights! Even just the white ones

(if you don't do the color)

I keep one light on all the time at night

summer and winter. It's the light over the stove but I put in a floresent bulb so it doesn't get hot or waste much electric. Dave and I like when it gets a little dark, we feel cozier inside and neither one of us minds a dark house. Try flouresent bulbs, they are kind of expensive (I think I paid $15 for a four pack) but they last for years.
