Getting out the cat smell
Anyone have a tried and true remedy for getting that cat piss smell out of carpet? We moved into our new house over the weekend, and there is one bedroom that just reeks of cat piss. Old tenant must have had a cat that sprayed all over that room. I tried the Arm & Hammer carpet deoderizer spray that you vacuum up last night, and it did only marginal good. Anyone? I'd like to get the smell out because, obviously, it isn't pleasant, but also, we'd like to get a cat of our own soon, and I know if we don't get the smell out before we get the new cat, it will likely start spraying in that room, too.
the best stuff to buy is the stuff that you can get at a pet store that is for removing cat pee odors but has an "oxy" reference in it, such as
Simple Solution Oxy Solution Pet Stain and Odor Destroyer. The key is to get something that has a chemical version of hydrogen pyroxide, which will change the chemical makeup of the pee and remove the smell. Hydrogen pyroxide works but will bleach your carpet, so these solutions are made with a different molecular structure of hydrogen pyroxide. It might still lighten or bleach so test an area first. I used it on our rugs and it worked. We have tried Nature's Miracle before and it does not work as well.
hope it works out, we had terrible cat pee problems and spent a fortune finding the right solution so I am glad to share the hard-earned wisdom.
'cuz my cat has to be kept out of one room of the house 'cuz she has claimed herself a second bathroom there. here's hoping the oxy thing will get her back to being a one-bathroom kitty!

i've had good luck with Woolite Pet stain remover. It does lighten the color a bit so make sure you dont leave it on too long, or use on dark carpets.

Nature's miracle.
Although I've heard that cheap, undiluted vodka works, too (for the rug, not you).

For a long-term true solution for homeowner's I recommend this: take out carpet and carpet pad, paint floor with Shelac (a semi-natural product that will seal the scent away so that other cat's won't smell it) Then re-carpet. Shelac is cheap, and carpet remnants big enough for one room can be pretty cheap.
sorry, I've not heard of any remedies that will kill scent enough for other cats not to smell. Or even people.
Even if you are renting, seems you might be able to get your landlord to help with this problem.

I was wondering if I might need to venture to a pet store and determine what they had there. I will look into that--thank you!
