PLEASE boycott Survivor!

I am truly baffled that the upcoming season of "Survivor" was a) created in the first place and b) will even be allowed to air on television. The show will involve teams that are segregated according to race: blacks, white, Latinos, and Asians in separate groups, according to information in today's media. I am shocked and appalled that this has happened, is to be aired, and that the network is proudly talking about it in the media!

Go to cbs.com if you have a second. There is a "Feedback" link at the very bottom of the home page, in the far left. Send a letter.

I'm totally boycotting this if it does, in fact, air. The voyeurism is not worth it to me. I am not giving the network those ratings.

That is crazy!

What are they thinking?? It will be easy for me to boycott, I have never watched the show.

well i don't have tv anymore

well i don't have tv anymore (thank maude) and stuff like this is one of the reasons why.

survivor has always been a totally racist show. I hate how they show up someplace, turn who ever lives there into some kind of theme park spectacle and play those stupid games when in reality there is a lot of worthwhile things they could be doing or learning about where they are.

Yeah

I haven't watched "Survivor" (or much tv at all really) in years but I was reading something today in which the producers said that the idea actually sparked when they were accused of not being a culturally diverse enough show. Um, okay. So the way to be diverse is to bring on a more diverse cast and then overtly promote racism by segregating people?!

I realize that is totally not what you're talking about. Just another point.

Well, as I watched my latest TIVO'd

Flava Flav I'll have to say it's a close second. Which, by the way, I have to ask why more women don't "boycott" THAT show? Sweet Jesus, they are competeing for him as their "man?"

Ratings? Seriously. Where does it end?

I'll say it,

I heart Survivor. thought i hated it forever, but i got hooked when i was prego. and while i do understand your outrage with this premise, because it will be so easy for this subject manner to be treated in a shmaltzy way, i don;t think exploring racial divides and tensions on one of the top rated television shows in the world is inherently bad.

i, myself, am looking forward to seeing how they set it up. i think the discussions that can be sparked from this is exactly what is needed in the world right now. put it out there, talk about it, perhaps even find some common ground upon which to build solutions. not that i;m convinced Survivor can cure the word's ills (!) but i think far too many people tune into prime time television to tune out what is really going on in the world and even in their own communities. if this can steer joe couch potato into thinking a little differently about white priveldge, or force dressy bessy to confront her own racist thoughts, then i'm all for it.

maybe it's because i work in this industry, but i just don't believe in encouraging a boycott of any piece of art or film or even mainstream television, be it Andres Serrano's "Piss Christ" or "The Last Temptation of Christ" or "Survivor," until i've seen it myself. If i find it repulsive, i'll tune out and encourage other's to do so. until then, i'm intrigued.

Damn girl, you make some sense!

I stopped watching it after that naked fat man (what was his name?) was running around a few years ago throwing his weenie around to use as an angle (no pun intended) and cause some of the women he was competeing with to lose balance on some obstacle course. Can I say, "Naked Fat man?" (I got in trouble a while back so I'm gun shy saying thigs like "Fat Fuck").

I actually think he won?

he won the very first season. the season when he grossed people out with his wiener was the allstars one. he got busted shortly after that. and he didn't win the allstar season.

me too. but while you may know about the biz, i know joe couch potato and dressy bessy, and they aren't going to think differently, or confront their own racist thoughts. not from tv anyway. when they talk about it, i expect it will be racist as all fuck.

Oh Crockmama! I just pee-pee'd my cheap knock off True Religion

Pants! (Don't BUSt my chops anyone, I did not write this, ALTHOUGH I WISH I was this funny)

Welcome to CBS' "Fun with outdated stereotypes and gross generalizations!" This will be a difficult one to handicap. With no cars to drive on the island, Team Asian's traditional achilles heel will be out of the picture. Team Latino will be pretty good at gathering the fruits and vegetables, no doubt. Team African-American will of course sweep the athletic challenges.

Team Whitey can go a few different ways, of course. If the team is mostly Jewish, it'll waste its time starting conflicts and lending conch-shells-as-currency to the other teams, which will distract it from the challenges at hand. If the team is mostly Italian-American, expect the other teams to suffer random kneecap injuries, and lots of impromptu ways of cooking maggots and cockroaches in marinara sauce. And if the team is WASPy, expect it to get ahead by hacking into the other teams' Sidekicks, spewing racial epithets all around, opening an outdoor nightclub or boutique hotel on the Westside of Cook Island, and gaining extra boosts of energy by doing lines of coke off of stray coconut husks.

You're certainly entitled to

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. If you want to give them ratings that is your prerogative. It won't be playing in my house. I think there is a HUGE difference, frankly, between "exploring racial divides and tensions" and blatantly segregating groups according to race "to see what happens."

is the premise of this

is the premise of this season really any more offensive than the past twelve, when they only had one or two token "people of color" and a bevy of fat americans starved themselves just for the fun of it while 2/3rds of the world is starving for real? how about when they divided teams into the old and the young and all the "old ladies" were all voted off first? awwwyeah, ageism in all it's shining glory! i dunno, it's crap tv anyway you slice it, so i guess i'm not offended because i don't expect much more from it than what it is - opium for the masses. but discussing why this premise is so offensive is interesting to me, so i'm glad you posted.

Damn, I love survivor. I

Damn, I love survivor. I didn't get upset on the last season when they were segregated by age and sex. Maybe I should have. But I am surprised they would do this premise. I'll be interested to read the thoughts hipmamas have on this.

My main thing was I would boycott if someone actually died and they continued on with the show. My and fx had a fight over that one. As I shared my thoughts (not expecting a debate) and he launched into some diatribe about how they should televise executions (!wtf!) KNOWING it would piss me off and make me sick that I was even with him. Ug.

I read about this too and it baffles me... It's really going to be hard for me to boycott since it's one of my favorite shows. Ughh!
