Year End

It is spring time in San Antonio
The weather has dropped to a “cool 75 degrees each morning
My student’s file inside the classroom,
wearing sweaters over khaki uniform shorts.

The bell rings, class has ended,
and they are reluctant to step outside,
knowing that the ripe smell
of left over cafeteria breakfast
is baking in the
dumpster standing just outside my classroom.
They think of excuses to linger,
“¿Necesitas ayuda Maestra?

I read aloud to them for “just five more minutes
in our little tin can, portable classroom
where we bake like so many small brown tropical flowers
in our blue and yellow T-shirts,
emblazoned with the school logo.
The window air unit remains untouched,
we complain that it makes our arms and bones feel cold,
and instead decorate the room with
brightly colored butterflies and paper flowers.

Hey momma's:
I have survived my first year of teaching somewhat intact, even if I have already had to call in the teacher's union, and hire an attorney on retainer...they are giving me hell. I am so missing the mamas. Unfortunately, the school does not allow us to access this site...something about "this combination of hip + mama is restricted blah blah blah" anyway, I am major stressed but looking forward to hitting Hip Mama big time in just another two weeks or so once school is over and life ain't so crazy. Will fill in more later, but I literally...almost lost my mind this year mommas. Hope all is well with my sistahs. Miss y'all.

I think of you often....

I'm glad you are teaching. You are so NEEDED. Thank you so much for being there, for making a difference in so many children's, so many parent's lives. Can't wait to hear from you again.

This poem is beautiful; like you are. Miss you. *hugs*

"They"

They being the administration. I have been (and still am) a total emotional wreck. My life is a mess! I am trying to be strong and get through this...but basicly I am getting deeply screwed because I am under an alternative certificate and have to have the principal sign off for me to get certified. She is not willing to do that we have personal issues). There is appparently no need for documentation in order for her to not certify me. I have never had anything this totally outrageous happen to me. I have had recommendations from my mentor and other teachers but beyond that I can't really do much except roll over and take it, and come back next year on a temp certificate again...hoping that cooler heads will prevail.

i knew it! those aholes.

awww jeez any chance for a new school? a new principal, a new hope? that's just like admin - to push and push til the end. is there an ap you can get to sign the waiver? i'm sorry! i had a similar situation last year - thankfully this year i have the correct license (i did all along, but nclb bs gave them ideas of grandeur, but i got the license!!)

seems like you should be able to find a certain number of letters to replace the principal - as if she is end all be all. who gets to decide?

Dreammama is that you? Tell me more.

Did you change your name?
I am trying to grieve the alternative certification program that I am going through. It just pisses me off because I have kept excellent documentation, and the big boss has none, and no one seems to care. I am filing appeals left and right but this school district is corrupt. I am not sure if I am more pissed at her, or at the alt cert program for leaving me so unprotected. I have submitted reccommendations from everybody and there mama and still it gets me nowhere! They are making go back next year under the same damn woman. If they don't give me the certification by December...screw the Union, I am getting an employment attorney! I know this is a late response so if I don't get a reply from you I'll send a p.m.
