Hank needs the hipmamas: Diarrhea

So Hank woke up this morning covered in diarrhea. Shit was everywhere--even in his hair. He was pissed off, and I don't blame him. The thing is, he's never had a single case of diarrhea and he's 15 months old (I know, I know. I am one lucky mama). So, he won't eat, doesn't really want to drink anything; he's not even that enthusiastic about the boob (also a first!). No fever. He's kind of lethargic, mostly just wants to be close to me. Oh, yeah, and he's suddenly got the worst diaper rash he's ever had--presumably from the raging, acidic shit he was covered in.

So, we're taking it easy, reading quietly, letting his ass air out, but I'm concerned about dehydration. Any hipmama advice on this? He won't drink anything. Also, any recommendations for tending to that badass diaper rash? Finally, any ideas of foods that might tempt him? He won't even eat his beloved crackers. Thanks Mamas. ~Elizabeth

Maybe a momsicle?

Put perhaps a drop of food coloring in some expressed milk and freeze? Novelty works wonders I think.

Oh wow.

That's a great idea! See? Now that wouldn't have occurred to me in a million years. Thanks, Mama Dagny!

I don't get credit

Someone else suggested it to me to satisfy DS desire for table food when he was still a little young.

ask dr sears

vincent and i just had the plague and i was worried about dehydration too. looked it up on askdrsears.com. seems like it takes alot to dehydrate them but the momsickle is a great idea. i can tell you from this recent experience that if you give pedialyte, DILUTE it, it is thick and sweeeeeeet and nasty, it made vinny barf straight. he liked diluted frozen pedialyte too. in ice cube trays. good luck doll, this was vinny's first sickness too at 16 months and it SUCKED! hey, at least you are still nursing. i was wishing for it that first night.

Yuck

I'm so sorry for your little guy and for you for the poop issue. It sucks when they've got the diarrhea and you can't get them to feel good.
DS was in the hospital for dehydration two weeks ago (a result of rotavirus). The docs said to look for no wet diaper in four hours, no tears when crying, dry mouth, and if you pinch the skin on the back of their hand and it doesn't spring back, it's bad.
Try some pedialyte (DS HATES it, but try it nonetheless) or Gatorade. I know there's more sugar in that, but at least you're getting the electrolytes back into baby. I'd definitely say nurse if your little one will take it...
I'm a bit paranoid about the rotavirus thing, but I know that a nasty diaper rash accompanies it most of the time, so I'd take him in if he doesn't improve in the next day or so.
I hope he's feeling better soon.

Thanks, Pelli

I think I remember you posting about this. Wow, you must have been out of your skull with worry. Can't get Hank to drink anything, still. I think I will go pick up some gatorade when BD gets home. I'm starting to be more concerned--I've never seen Hank quite this lethargic. Hm. Thank you for the advice. ~E

the BRAT diet

I have heard reccomended for little kids with the runs feeding them Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. But that would be for a baby who wanted to eat and had diareah. I don't know what to reccomend for a baby who doesn't.

Thanks Mamas, and update

Thanks, Mamas, for all the good advice. I went to the Dr. Sears site and we're working on the BRAT approach to eating. Still can't get him to show any interest, though. He's not drinking much either. I did get him to eat half a banana, and it went right through him. He was crapping the thing out less than an hour after he ate it. I wonder how concerned I should be. He's just so lethargic; all he wants to do is sit in my lap and have me stroke his head.

Dang shits.

It's really goin around... ugh. Good luck to you... we had a rough 9 days of this. Maggie bout with the shits included poop in her hair, my hair,.... pretty much everywhere. We were lucky she liked pedialyte. Just keep trying little sips... of fluids... water, juice, pediaa, etc. My Maggie was super lethargic too. She has not napped on me since she was 6 weeks old but when she was sick I got a whole hour of my precious girl asleep on my chest. Good luck to you both. A&D ointment worked the best for her diaper rash during the shitty sickness.

Use a straw

I forgot to mention that the only way I could get a little fluid into DS was by using a straw, filled with some water and put that in his mouth. It helped get SOMETHING into him.

this works for nia too

a straw or a dropper - anything more interesting than a sippy cup. we had the first bout of shits a few weeks back too. damn, it cuks! and after i had to actually put nia in the tub to get her clothes off of her, i finally really felt like a true mom.

its just horrible to see them so lethargic! nia would crawl a little on the floor and then just lay her head down and sleep (and she will not do that when she is well, i can tell you). once she felt a little bit better, i would smash up banana and mix it with oatmeal or applesauce to kinda trick her into getting that fiber.

Triple Paste is also great for diaper rash

it costs about twice as much as A & d though. I had to have my pharmacist special order it. But it worked wonders on a wicked nasty rash. I originally found out about it from a nurse practitioner who gave me some free samples, maybe you can get some from your doc.

Good luck, that babe is going to be fine because you are taking such good loving care of him.
