i know sunflower tends to know about "natural" stuff and many others of you, too, so i'd like to know what people have done about eczema. DS has developed it over the past month (he's 11 months old). . .and at first i figured it was the dry winter weather and then i tried to eliminate wheat (no results) and now have eliminated his every other day egg yolk. . . he's got it on the backs of knees, creases in arms and wrist, a spot near his mouth and last night spots over his belly. it doesn't seem to bug him, but it is getting increasingly worse. . .one book i read said avoid over-bathing and the other said a 10 minute bath every day. would an oatmeal bath work? are there any other causes for eczema than allergens and genetics?

I have it and so do my kids.

I have it and so do my kids. We use California Baby Calendula Diaper Cream. I know, I know it's diaper cream but it works! I have never tried any other brand of calendula cream on eczema. Maybe Weleda would work as wel but it's more expensive.

Oatmeal baths are good for any skin ailment

and I would try to cut out as much sugar from his diet as possible. Eczema is a chronic problem, and I think it's tied to something else going on inside. I would take him to an acupuncturist, because I've gotten a lot of help from one with my own skin probs (I had really bad psoriasis). They can give you diet info and try and figure out why this is happening, as well as treat it.
If you don't have an insurance that covers it, just ask around until you can find one that someone recommends. Call that person and ask if they do sliding-scale fees. If they do (which most of them do), you can usually get the treatments for $20-30 bucks. You'll probably have to take him once a week.

would natural sugars count?

the only sugar he gets is in the form of his fruits (either organic and fresh or earth's best) and a small amount in oatios (like 2 grams for a cup serving and he only eats about 1/2 cup max.). . .there is an acupuncturist that i know of that i'll make an appt. . . .i still want to see if it might be the eggs. the only dairy he gets is homemade yogurt and he's had that since 7 months i doubt it's dairy. thanks for all the feedback!

I was told by my acupuncturist to avoid sugars

for my skin probs. She said that the skin is the "yang" organ of the lungs... You basically have 5 yin organs (lungs, heart, spleen, liver, kidneys). Those are more or less in control of everything. Each "yin" organ has a "yang" organ, which it is interrelated to.
Typically, chronic skin problems can be traced to something going on in the lungs. Sugars exaccerbate lung issues, because they cause mucus, so when I was originally being treated, my doc told me to cut back on sugar. I just cut back on refined sugar and flour and it seemed to make a big difference.

No eczema, but my daughter

No eczema, but my daughter does have super-dry skin that tends to get patchy and a little scaly, especially in cold weather, and yeah, it does seem to help not to over-bathe...in addition to the oatmeal baths I've also heard that adding a bit of olive oil to the bath helps...

Olive oil is so good. And dried calendula flowers.

MSM cream

i put it on my daughter's, and it seems to help. nothing really "works," you can only lessen the symptoms. and MSM seems to make it heal faster.

Hey, good luck

Omega 3 fatty acids, preferably from fish oil. Nordic Naturals and Coromega make kids' formulas.

You may want to also try probiotics. They have done some good research on Lactobacillus rhamnosus and eczema in babies.

Also, eliminate all fragrances, even in shampoos and conditioners. See if that helps.

I've had eczema and contact

I've had eczema and contact dermatitis of all sorts for over 20 years and I swear by oatmeal baths, olive oil rubdowns, and rhus tox. I also found a cream online (developed by a naturopath) that I love and that had gotten rid of DS eczema patches on knees, elbows, and lower back. I even used it as a lotion for his super dry skin as he recovered from a strep rash that covered his entire body. It's called Hope's Relief Creme: http://www.hopes.com.au/

Great info can be found here, as well as testimonials about the cream:
