dental work while pregnant

tell me what you know about getting dental work done while you are pregnant. I have read a little bit on the internet and so far it seems to say that it is pretty much fine, but wait until the second trimester. I had a root canal at the very begining of my pregnancy (took a test, it was negative) and don't really think it will cause me problems, but it is so hard to get any kind of straight answers about this stuff. I still need to get a crown and three serious fillings. Now that I am hitting the second trimester I am considering getting as much of this stuff done as I can.

REally helpful:

I did read something negative about this--but I can't remember what. I remember thinking, "whew-I'm glad I didn't have work done as suggested".

maybe it was just about the

maybe it was just about the xrays?

which would make sense.

which would make sense. those big lead aprons they make you wear can't be good either.

now those are the sort of rock solid facts I like to base my decsions on!

I am kind of torn between just waiting (what could happen in 6 months?) or getting it done to avoid some sort of infection that would cause preterm labour. I have bad teeth though (Ireland represent!) and even when I take super good care of them and eat well, I get cavities. Apparently so does my son. I had bad teeth last pregnancy and everything came out fine so who knows?

it also depends

if you have a pregnancy induced heart murmur (I did in my first with Drunk. It is quite normal, due to extra blood vloume, but that would mean they should give you antibiotics during any major procedure. Otherwise, apprently the infection is more likely (still rare though) to backwash and get caught in a compartment of your heart.
Bad mouth infections can cause premature labor however, so if you can get it taken care of, it may be the lesser fo two evils.

my dentist (whom I trust

my dentist (whom I trust immensely) wouldn't do any work that required anesthesia on me either time i was pregnant and i needed a root canal and crown both times. once i miscarried, i could get get the last one done. it was the only bright spot. his reasons (that I can remember): 1) he didn't want to introduce any kind of anesthetic into my body, because it all would affect the baby; 2) he didn't want to introduce any bacteria into my system; and 3) he didn't want to subject me to any xrays. HOWEVER, he did say that if i found myself in a position of great pain and i couldn't stand it, we could do the work. otherwise, he just wanted me to wait it out.

I'm pretty sure much of the hoo ha surrounds anesthesia during the first trimester. I'm sure your root canal was fine. I had one done, also 1st trimester after a negative test. I would get as much work done as possible 2nd tri if only to avoid being in that lousy chair when you're feeling big and bulky in the 3rd!
