Ear Infection Advice

Hey, Everyone. I think my little monkey may have an ear infection. He keeps pulling on his right ear and his nose is running a bit. No temperature. Mood is okay (maybe a little clingier than usual). But the past three nights have horrible--up all night, crying, wanting to nurse until I think my tits might fall off.

He's a year old and, so far, we've avoided all antibiotics. Any way to avoid them this time? Any advice? Anything else that could be going on? I thought it might be teething, but I couldn't feel anything in his gums.

I could use some help. Another night like the last three and I might be a candidate for the booby hatch. Thanks. Hope you're all well. E

could try homeopathic

could try homeopathic hyland's earache relief. They have tablets and drops.

The medicines in Hyland's Earache Tablets have been clinically shown to reduce earache symptoms in the first 48 hours of the episode. Hyland's Earache Tablets are quick dissolving tablets that work gently without side effects. Each package contains a reference booklet written by a physician and a pharmacist. If, on the advice of a physician, you're waiting for 48 hours to pass before filling a prescription, you can help ease your child's discomfort with Hyland's Earache Tablets.
Indications for Use:
For the relief of symptoms of fever, pain, irritability and sleeplessness associated with earaches in children after diagnosis by a physician. If symptoms persist for more than 48 hours or if there is a discharge from the ear, discontinue use and contact your health care professional.
Earache Tablets Formula:
Pulsatilla 30C HPUS - for ear pain worse at night
Chamomilla 30C HPUS - for restlessness or irritability
Sulphur 30C HPUS - for ear pain with burning sensation

Oils

with mullein (herb) and garlic...good thing to have in the house, make by using good oil (olive) and some dried mullein and garlic cloves...cap tightly and store for 6 weeks then it's ready to use. If you need it immediatly, I've heard that you can put it all in a pot and cook it on very low heat for a while to speed up the process...check if websites like Susun Weed's have more info...

They make these commercially. Herb Pharm has a good one.

my doctor says

pain control for the first 48 hours, by which she means tylenol as needed, and then if the babe isn't better she would consider antibiotics. She says most ear infections are viral, not bacterial, and therefore antibiotics aren't effective. I like to use oil of eucalyptus mixed with a little oil around the outside of the ear.
What you describe does sound like an ear infection.
Take care

I had chronic ear infections

I had chronic ear infections up into adulthood. They are the one thing that I don't hesitate to use antibiotics on. They are potentially serious, tend to not go away on their own, and are freakin' painful.

Thanks, Everyone.

This is all good advice. He's sleeping now, with a touch of garlic and olive oil in his ear. He's also going to the doc tomorrow afternoon. I feel awful--he's clearly in A LOT of pain tonight. He cried for hours tonight before he fell asleep exhausted. I should have taken him in a couple of days earlier, but I had all these deadlines and papers to grade and he wasn't running a fever and fuck, fuck, FUCK, I thought maybe it wasn't a big deal. I hate knowing that my baby's hurting and I haven't done enough to help him. Bah.

Dr. Rentea in Chicago

Dr. Rentea in Chicago (Paulina Health Clinic) has a homeopathic remedy for ear infection. It's called 527 (if I remember correctly?) I remember it contains belladonna, but can't remember anything else about it. You could give her a call, but I don't know if she'll prescribe without a consult.

Also, try massaging behind the ears in a downward motion. This draws the infection down, if there is one, and is very soothing for baby.

God - I hear you - those are

God - I hear you - those are the worst nights ever. DS had ear infections his entire first year. It got to the point where I would just call the doc at 2:00 am, hold the phone up, and she'd prescribe over the phone. Hope he (and you!) are doing better today.

Yeah, better.

BD's home today, so I'm taking off in a few minutes to do a little lowkey shopping and, more importantly, BE ALONE for a few hours. Ahhhh. I really need just a few hours off; I've been having those "car wheels on a gravel road" fantasies. Seriously. Right now, the little monkey's nursing away and seems perfectly happy.

apple cider vinegar

it works wonders and you can get it anywhere. i use it for me, my daughter and my pets. totally harmless, yet super effective. it dries everything out without the harshness of alcohol or peroxide. just pour a small amount in the ear, let it settle, then dump it out. my grandmother used to use vinegar for everything. it is like gentian violet, it became obsolete when antibiotics became a wonder drug, but finally even doctor's are giving credit to alternative therapies.
