tylenol for teething?

poor DS was up about 6 times last night crying. . .he is 8 months and is cutting his fourth tooth and seemed really miserable last night about it. i was talking about it here at work today (since i got up 6 times last night too and i make sure all my co-workers know that if i am spacey or bitchy that it has to do with lack of sleep not necessarily them). . . and every single one who is a mom said to give him tylenol. why am i weirded out to give him tylenol? the homeopathic tablets i have don't seem to do the trick and the same goes for the clove oil stuff either.

Motrin Fan

We've had better luck with Motrin than with Tylenol too. All my mommy buddies swear by it.

One of my parishoners who is a pathologist, told me to use Motrin instead of Tylenol because of overdose risks. She recently had an infant patient who had to have a liver transplant because of Tylenol overdose. It isn't easy (parents used an alternative measuring system rather than the dropper and dosed the child with a Tylenol cold remedy for a week +) but it still makes you think.

yikes!

yikes!

tylenol

I gave him tylenol at 6 months when he had extreme, screaming-in-pain, waking-up-every-few-minutes teething pain. It did seem to give him relief from the pain and helped him sleep.

I *think* I've seen that you can get the dye-free kind, so you're not giving your baby that bright red liquid. Or maybe that's Motrin that's dye free? I don't know, I haven't tried it.

If you're uncomfortable with giving medicine at all, a nice warm bath is a good way to soothe pain and discomfort. It will help you both relax.

Best of luck to you!

I don't mean to be scary,

I don't mean to be scary, especially because you're tired, and I haven't done much research about this problem (maybe others will know more) but I stopped giving any kind of ibuprofen to DS when I heard about Stevens Johnson Syndrome, at least until I could do more research (which I haven't yet been inclined to do as homeopathic remedies or Tylenol as last resort work fine for DS). I'm sure there's much more info out there, but here's a quick article I saw yesterday while searching for a homeopathic pediatrician.

Motrin/Advil Dangerous for Children?
By Randall Neustaedter OMD, LAc, CCH | Published 08/11/2005

Nine-year-old Kaitlyn Langstaff of Saratoga California died, apparently as a result of taking Children's Motrin. She died after a 20 months illness which left her unable to see, speak, breathe on her own or eat without a feeding tube. Her parents' court case was settled in November of 2004 for an undisclosed amount. Her parents cannot discuss the case.

Three-year-old Heather Rose Kiss of New Jersey died a week after taking Children's Advil.

Seven-year-old Sabrina Brierton Johnson of Los Angeles went blind after taking Children' Motrin. In December 2004 her parents filed a lawsuit against the drug manufacturer Johnson &Johnson. Retailers Ralph's Grocery and Albertsons Sav-On pharmacies were also named in the lawsuit.

Sabrina took Motrin for a fever when she came home from school. The next morning she woke with a high fever and was taken to the hospital. By the next day she was blind in both eyes. Her parents want Children's Motrin taken off the market until the product carries a warning label about the drug's risks.

The rare disorder known as Stevens' Johnson Syndrome (SJS) has been recognized as an adverse effect of Motrin (ibuprofen) since the 1980s. At that time Motrin was a prescription only drug and it included a warning of this risk.

The lawsuit accuses the manufacturer and distributors of negligence, breach of warranty, and of concealing from consumers and doctors potential health risks of the drug.

The HPA cautions parents to consider the risks of using ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) in children and to seek alternatives to conventional painkillers and fever medications.

risks

there are some risks involved with every substance you put into a child's system, regardless of its origin. as anti-establishment as i tend to be, if any substance was more detrimental than beneficial ( a ratio we always have to consider when using any remedy) it would most likely not be available for infants and children, not because our government health agencies CARE, but because the manufacturers would not be willing to risk class actions. i think that a balance of self-advocacy and trust in your health care providers, naturopathic, holistic, or in my case, osteopathic, is the key. and within reason, if a commonly used over the counter medication can relieve my son's suffering, i will use it with the greatest discretion, just as i do the natural and homeopathic remedies, which are NOT harmless themselves. we need to arm ourselves with solid research findings, humble health care professionals, and try and make the best decisions we can for our children. for every risk of a reaction to a treatment there is the risk of doing nothing. i try not to let that fact overwhelm me every day.
just my 2 cents.

Pain is pain

I personally don't believe in homeopathy. Yes, camomile & such can help calm them, but pain is pain. I've never used motrin, but I have had luck with tylenol. My dd hated teething rings, so I made popsicles out of camomile tea, that seemed to help the gums some. Good luck.

i agree

hylands pellets, camellia, and traumeel are great, but i do motrin when he is in pain. no big deal.

tylenol blows

i used motrin and it seemed to work like a dream. dd used to run a fever that wouldn't go away and the dr told me to give tylenol first and if after an hour it wasn't working to give motrin.

Motrin does work better.

Motrin does work better. Nothing is going to happen if you give the baby some motrin except the baby will be in less pain or none. Its up to you to decide if thats worth it.[i think it is]

i use all the natural stuff

i use all the natural stuff i can but if nobody's sleeping and he's miserable its not going to kill him from time to time. personally i think tylenol is useless and use motrin, though. also try rubbing traumeel on his gums (make sure its the cream not the gel)- that seems to help some as well.
