i'm just wondering what people's take on yogurt for the baby is? i am navigating the world of baby diets with my handy super baby food book and she recommends starting yogurt as early as 6 months. my bugaboo is 7 months and i am looking to vary his diet. i'm getting a little tired of serving up the avocado, rice cereal, peas, carrot, banana, sweet potato combo. oh, and pears!. . .i'm just hesitant on the yogurt because it is dairy and it seems a little early. any other yummy stuff you can think of for a 7 month old?

yogurt

I always used SuperBaby food guidelines and gave yogurt around 6mos. My daughters have no dairy allergies and had no ill reactions to it. YOu could try a bit and see how your little one does. Have you tried any other grains for cereals? You could do that.

good luck!

homemade yogurt

is what i'd be giving him since that's what we eat. . .i think i'll give it a shot this week.

i am not crazy about the rice cereal and want to start more whole grains. but am not doing an iron supplement.

are iron supplements really necessary?

my doc says yogurt is fine

apparently, yogurt is different from milk - something about the proteins - and so it doesn't really count in terms of waiting to introduce dairy til one year. same reason why people who are lactose intolerant can eat yogurt.

we've been feeding yogurt about one month now (ds is now 8 mo) with no problems and ds loves it. i mix plain whole yogurt with fruit puree.

i got the book "feeding the whole family" and it's really good. she suggests quinoa as a good baby grain because it's high in protein, etc. we tried some yesterday and ds wasn't too into it. the texture is totally different from his purees, but i think i'll keep trying it.

I think Dr. Sears said

I think Dr. Sears said something about the enzymes in yougurt make it okay to start before 12mo. DD started at 6 or 7 & still loves it. Also, I bought a yogurt maker from WIlliams-Sonoma a few years ago, so if you make it yourself, you can make it more fatty & less sugary. That is one good thing in Germany, yogurt is so yummy!

I did. I read that protein

I did. I read that protein foods are better for them than carbs under 8 mos to a year. So I avoided the cereal and stuff, but did yoghurt and silken tofu. Yoghurt is easier to digest because it is already partially digested do to the enzymes and bacteria. It could still be an allergen though. Mine loves plain yoghurt with spirulina, so it is a great way to get a lot of super-concentrated green nutrition into her.

Silken tofu can be easily mashed with a fork and served as is right out of the box, or with veggies.

I didn't feed mine a ton before age 1, and pretty much started her out on the same foods I eat. This worked really well for me.
