Solid Food?

I need help! I feel like I am just guessing at how to do this weaning to solids thing. I have my baby eating 3 solid food meals a day and has been for about a month now. She has tried lots of veggies and several fruit. But I am not sure how big of a serving she should be eating, how much texture she should have, when to introduce proteins, how much breast milk she should still be getting. My Dr. said she can now have anything but eggs, peanut butter, and honey. But my recipe book says not a lot of cow's milk, spinach, or things like that until after a year. My Dr. also said to try and introduce texture and to thicken her food up, but I have noticed that the little bit of stage 2 food I bought in a jar doesn't have much texture. I am trying to keep her organic, make it myself, and I am the only one of my friends that is still nursing after 7 months, so I am hoping to get some help from some other like minded mamas out there. (the DH is clueless and is constantly asking me what he should and should not give her, and my mother's generation did solid food completely different from what is recommended now.) Any advice to help me find my way?

are you looking to wean your

are you looking to wean your baby off of breastmilk and onto solids or just to introduce solid food? My baby didn't really eat much of anything until he was almost 18 months. He nursed alot which sometimes drove me nuts but I got through and weaned him when he turned two. I just fed him little bits of everything, yogurt especially. I would blend up fruits and veggies until he was about one and he preferred finger foods so I would cut stuff up into tiny pieces. He also really stared getting into brown rice and different kinds of beans at this age. Now he just eats what we eat. That was my approach and it worked for me.

we waited

until dd was 1 year to really focus on food and meals and protein, etc. They really don't need anything else for the first year, honestly. Even now at 18 months dd doesn't eat 3 solid meals a day, but she is fine. It's hard to keep it all straight and it's really hard to interpret how we eat into such a small package. We have had our best luck with giving her a mini portion of whatever we eat. It will be so much easier in a few months when your dd is 1, but for now I would focus on meals being fun for her and easy for you.

It's great that you're still

It's great that you're still nursing! Keep it up as long as you want to...it's so good for your babe. How does she like solids? Is she receptive to them? Mine wasn't really interested until about 11 months, and she was never really interested in the pureed-type of stuff, really went straight to finger-foods, even though I tried lots of stuff in pureed form--sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans, etc. Avocado and banana are also good, as is apple sauce, yogurt, beans, etc. As far as amounts, if she likes it and is eating I think you can follow her lead... Mine was always relatively picky so if I found something she liked I would just let her eat as much as she wanted. And as far as nursing, you can continue to nurse as much as she is willing to do it, if it is comfortable for you, too.

It sounds like you are doing a great job...just feel your way...follow her lead.

I am actually really pleased

I am actually really pleased with the way I have approached this. I barely fed mine under a year. Well, I let her expore tastes and textures but never worried about really getting "meals" in her. I had read enough stuff that suggested babies really shouldn't eat until 8 mos to a year, and I was completely content that my breastmilk was giving her everything she needed nutritionally. So, not worrying about food, I didn't do a ton of baby food and just let her eat what she would/could of ours.

The result is this little 19 month old (who still nurses) who is the greatest eater!! I am so impressed and proud that my little daughter eats (most of) whatever mom and dad eat, even thai food, indian food, veggie pizza, kale, spinach, etc. She just shared a green salad with oil and vinegar with me. She also feeds herself which I love watching.

What I like about this approach is I've never had to order (so far) off of a children's menu and rarely if ever bring her seperate food to a restaurant...it's just so easy and she eats such a variety of "adult" or "health" foods that my 7-12 yo siblings won't touch with a 10 foot pole. I don't have to fix seperate meals for her and she gets to enjoy what the family is having. I wonder if I had started her off on a completely seperate diet and variety of flavors than her dad and I eat, how long it would take to adjust her to ours? And is this why so many children are so picky?? (I think some pickiness is natural. I'll never make her eat anything or clean her plate...)

I am so glad you are still nursing, so far you are the only one of your friends who is even getting near meeting the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics...so remind them of that if they ever give you grief about your kid not eating as much as theirs. She is getting the best food on earth. Your perfect milk.

We have had a couple good discussions about this...maybe someone can post a link.
