my dd's halloween costume *update** I sent a couple of pics to the artist (Jeff Smith) who created the rat creatures and he wrote me back saying he liked my costume! How cool is he? I think I will print it and put it in the photoalbum next to the halloween pics when we get them...* I haven't attatched the eyes yet, but this is it. It is a "rat creature" form the Bone comic books (highly recommend them, btw...) i am so pleased with how this turned out and early, too! Yay! __________________

just gotta say
ditto. you are so talented. i love it.
Yay for 5ive! I love homemade Halloween costumes!
Right up there with the homemade birthday cakes.
We always make ours here. My kids are gettin' old, though, neither will commit to what they want to be and I'm telling them to get a move on. They pick crazy stuff so I need time to help them design and create their costumes. Last year, I had an "Ocean" and "Not A Happy Camper" on my hands. The year before, I believe it was a "Palm Tree" and a "Headless Butler." We were trying to remember all the things the kids have been over the years and couldn't! Guess I'd have to look through the photo albums.
I'm impressed with your sewing skills, 5ive. Bet your daughter is loving her costume.
Her eyes are so blue they match that towel behind her head.
I LOVE the "ocean" idea and
I LOVE the "ocean" idea and the "not a happy camper"! those are great! Your kids must be over 10...Definately a sign of children not forced to choose from charactes off tv for costumes... I cannot wait for ideas like those! My DD at 4 came up witht a fly and the rat creature this year. i told her that I am only making one for her for halloween but maybe she can get the fly as a christmas present. So now she tells everyone that she is going to be a fly for Christmas. I think we may all wear costumes for Christmas this year, I like the idea...

Thanks all! I started early because i still need to make a costume for my boy (vampire) and I have 2 classes to study for so I wanted to get the hard costume out of the way...
I always have made the costumes (for the last 7 years) my mom always made ours. Part is because it is fun and part because past costumes have included a knight, a tim man, a fly, a dragon, a tiger and a goat. Not only was it hard to even find these costumes, but they were so freaking expensive for a crappy costume mass produced in Asia that if I wanted it to be anything fun at all, I had to make it. This one is the most expensive i have made at $30 because fake fur is so freaking expensive...
We keep all the costumes for dress up. the tiger costume from 5 years ago is still in use by my daugter even though she is too tall for it and it won't zip up anymore and the legs come around her calves. I also have taken the feet out of old costumes so they will last longer. It is so much fun to see them pretending to be a tiger or dragon instead of a Disney princess and a power ranger.... This one will be definately kept....
And Halloween is second only to Christmas in consumerism...Kinda interesting that a VERY Pagan holiday ranks so closely behind a Christian Holiday.
And the eyes are styromfoam balls cut up and painted...I only wish I had a cocnut bra...
And thanks for the compliments on my pup, too... She's a keeper! I love the way the suit looks on her without the head. It makes her real head look so small! Reminds me of the "why can't I be you?" video....

How Awesome!
I love that you made your daughter a costume!
I was just contemplating this dilemna. When did Halloween get so commercial with the store-bought costumes? Or maybe it was always like that and my family just was different? I remember us making out costumes - part sewing and part constructing.
I think I can probably sew something well enough for it to last for Halloween. For sure, I can probably construct something. So, for S this year I thrifted part of her custume and we will make the rest.
Will you save this costume for your daughter?
Wow, that is quite a
Wow, that is quite a costume!! Your little rat creature is much cuter than the one on the comic book cover, of course.
(Wow, what lovely blue eyes!) Your skills as a seamstress kick ass all over the place.
very very cool
as usual, you rawk. Are the eyes made from a coconut bra?
I really need to get working on our costumes too.
We need to feel the cheer and inspiration of meeting each other, we need to gain the courage and fresh life that comes from the mingling of congenial souls, of those working for the same ends.

My 10 year old is totally freaking over this costume. He keeps saying "Wow! Cool! She is so smart!" He really likes Bone comix; reads them all the time.
Great job getting the costume done almost a whole month before halloween! I'm a "what can I make out of this" at the last minute kind of costumer, myself. I'm always impressed by people who plan ahead!
I LOVE it!!
That is the COOLEST costume ever!
I wish I was crafty. I am dying to dress up Sebastian as Max in his wolf suit from Where the Wild Things Are. Anyone know where to get a wolf suit for a 6 yr old?
