some info on the p[ledge of allegianceI keep getting theses weird e-mails trying to convert me to ignorance and right-wing agenda, so I looked up some info on why we should change the pledge to exclude the words "under God". In 1892 Francis Bellamy wrote the pledge of allegiance: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to*) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.' He considered placing the word, 'equality,' in his Pledge, but knew that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans. [ * 'to' added in October, 1892. ] In 1954, Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, added the words, 'under God,' to the Pledge. The Pledge was now both a patriotic oath and a public prayer. This information is available here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance *sigh* When will they learn? Oh, amnd Bellamy was a really cool guy, very forward thinking and fair. __________________

this was on here recently
and I put up the same wikipedia link. Great minds think alike! It was added at the end of the McCarthy era to combat Godless atheists by Eisenhower.
Most of our founders were Deists, so I've heard.

the thing about the pledge that weirds me out
is that it's a frickin' _pledge of allegiance_! why are tiny people who can't vote because they're not considered politically mature enough expected to essentially swear an oath of fealty every day before school starts? that is just not cool, god or no god.

brilliant post 5ive
as an atheist, this is an issue that is very important to me...as the attorney who finally won the supreme court case a couple of months ago said...imagine if all school children were expected to get up every morning and chant that they did not believe in the existence of a god...that is how atheists (and our children) feel every day...good to see a post about it.
