Is this a threat?

"I would recommend that you keep a dictionary close at hand or open a reference guide in Word or some other application to double check your assumptions before questioning your professor's use of a term."

My professor sent this to me in an email after I wrote him this email:

Hi,

I was just wondering if you intentionally used the word fate in the first DB? When I was rereading through it I noticed that your opening statement was:

"This has been the fate of tribal, or indigenous peoples virtually everywhere."

And then to say to me after my response that "fate has nothing to do with aculturation" seems contradictory...

Is that a threat? And why do I feel like he is attacking me? I feel like writing something b%tchy back but I want others opinions... I need to get a good grade in this class!!

Some of my friends that are going for their doctorates or are already teaching or both, get real sick of getting nit-picked by others. I think that's all that happened. Though the prof sounds like a total dickhead, and if I were there I'd tell him for you. haha.

No, it sounds nothing at all like a threat to me, though I sense irritation.

It sounds more like he doesn't think you understood him correctly, and rather than clarifying, he took a position of...irritation. (okay, you need a dictionary, I need a thesaurus. It's late.)

Frankly, I don't really get what you were questioning either. Course we're not seeing much here.

that he felt that he was being attacked by you, and has a really thin skin. it seems like an overreaction and because of that i'd drop it. if he's this bruised by that benign email, what's he going to do if you question it again? his recommendaion to keep a dictionary at hand is intended as an insult. whatever. let him have his little problem with being asked a simple question.
