about the ground zero rescuers' lungs aging 10 years in one day.

i was complaining among other things about the rescuers and other survivors not getting their aid to cover medical costs. the federal government required that they sign a waiver absolving the airlines, and if i remember correctly, the federal, state and city governments from any responsibility as a condition of their collecting the money they need to pay for the medical care they have been receiving.

NY's governor signed three laws for them yesterday. these laws would give financial aid to people who are suffering from illnesses yet to be named. they are not not being named because they are mild nuissance "ailments" but because what they suffer from has not yet been seen in history. there is glass in their lungs even now, and they have been exposed to unknown toxic chemicals. the way this article writes it, they suffer from sinusitis and other ailments, and fear they may develop cancer. it makes them seem like little nervous nellies sitting home going, "gee, i hope i don't get cancer [cough.... cough]." a good number of these people are home bound. they cannot work, they cannot breathe, and in order to pay their medical bills they are supposed to sign a document that no one is at fault. oh wait no, a document that says evildoers are at fault.

so, this city's mayor gets his little panties in a bunch about the governor passing these laws and having a ceremony at ground zero. he says:

"there is no free lunch." regarding people needing money. and

"you can't just walk into an office and say 'i need money, give it to me.'"

that's it. i just wanted you all to see how we're looking after 9/11 survivors. i mean, it's only 5 years later, what's the rush right? you can't have sick people cared for all willy-nilly, right? oh i have an idea, let's pass a law that says the evildoers have to pay the hospital bills of the people they tried and failed to kill.

Maybe after Oliver Stone's new movie comes out, people will change their toons a little bit. I guess it really concentrates on the survivors.
I'm pretty disgusted in western-capitalist culture in general, because it teaches us not only that we cannot help other people, but that we should not rely on other people for help. I, and so many of my friends, have guilty feelings whenever we need to ask for help...including help recovering from surgery or birth!!
So, I think that in addition to this problem, there is probably an unwillingness by the victims of this disaster to ask for help, because we are taught that it is weak.
I think this is bad, but I think that it's even worse that every day we cut the VA benefits for the soldiers who actually get to come back from Iraq. Our government treats us like shit as it watches it's own ass by laying down and kissing corporate America's ass.
I am personally of the persuasion that our government was behind the whole 9-11 thing...so I'll stop here before I get myself in a lot of trouble.
