Report from the third night of London riots:

Never fear, we are fine.

Though all the stores near me have closed, riot cops have partitioned part of the local area, armoured vehicles are streaming past, and helicopters are swooping overhead.

Is one of the effected areas your neighbourhood? Looks like MAYHEM.

Yep. There are burning cars ten blocks away.

My daughter's neighbourhood has buses, stores, and flats burning. Though luckily she is away in the countryside this week.

Latest quote from someone on the street: "this is a war between the people and the government."

so is there any ideology/reason for the rioting? anti-government? or anti-capitalism? anarchists? all i could tell was that it was "youths in hoodies" - is it just generalized anger at the economic issues? and then stuff gets inflamed by police?

any case, sounds scary, from all sides...

It was kicked off by the cops shooting a man on Thursday. The underlying issue (articulated by many people on the street) is the dire state of the economy, massive cuts to benefits and youth centres, overwhelming unemployment, police corruption scandals, and a widespread perception that the police abuse their stop and search powers. That is what happened in my neighbourhood tonight: a kid who was sitting in front of McDonalds with his sister was accosted by police. Passerby said no. Emphatically.

From the news reports it looks like a city-wide spontaneous class war. Spreading to other cities - Birmingham on the news now. No anarchists or black block that I can see on the footage. There is no defined organisation or stated ideology, just intense and pure rage.

Oh, and the budget cuts also hit the police force... so there aren't enough trained officers on the streets, which is raising the chaos.

I live in Hackney:

Riots & response

The videos on the right show the aftermath here, and ten minutes away in Tottenham, and probably also parts of Croydon burning. Rioting has spread throughout the city, every borough reporting trouble. Cars, buses, and buildings have been torched and looting is widespread.

I'm ok, my kids are safe, though we are hugely upset. This is history in the making, and it is terrifying.

I sincerely hope that everyone involved, no matter who or where or which side, gets through the night alive & safe.

Yeah, it seemed like class war, from what little the news reports said. the revolution?...
