I left Portland nine years ago.

I left the United States seven years ago.

And one year ago I became a citizen of the United Kingdom.

Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day!

I hung out with the inlays and blew up illegal shit 'cuz that's what's done in those parts. Then we travelled back today though this state's version of Appalachia. Swear two out of three properties were on the market out there. Car gardens, spray painted, 30+ year old, run down trailers, miles and miles of fields laying fallow in primeh haying and growing season... On. The. Market. Miles and miles and miles away from any interstate. So far out that the appearance of another vehicle, moving, on the road, after an hour of being alone on the road, was noteworthy enough to draw comment... There were actually two people out and about in Edwall as we drove through. Little town that's no longer actually a township. Saw two old school fire trucks heading out, plus an old school ambulance. Something bad was happening somewhere. Amazing to think that there are vast swathes of this country that are covered by volunteer firefighters, including Paul's home town, where we managed to set the field on fire only twice, despite heavy watering. Nothing a couple/three teen boys weren't delighted to go stomp out...

It's always an interesting way to celebrate Independence Day. Family stuff is always family stuff, and driving back through the beautiful and desolate rural counties and reservations always provides a lot of appropriate food for thought with regard to the history of this country, this state, where we've come from, and where we're heading toward.
