ESSURE (and hello, btw! )

Hey everyone. It has been eons since I posted here and I apologise profusely for just jumping right in with a questoins for you all, but I am needing some opinions I know I can count on.
So I am ready for permanent birth control. I am so done having kids that, well, I'm done. That is not the part I am wondering about.
What I am wondering about is this: have any of you had Essure done or know anyone who has had this done?
It sounds ideal, but it is relatively new (less than a decade old) and I woudl hate to have it fail me and get pregnant at 45 or to have it cause some horriffic ailment later on down the road.

patheitc americans. ignorant masses. ugh.

Please tell me people are not ALL this stupid.

my dd's halloween costume *update*

* I sent a couple of pics to the artist (Jeff Smith) who created the rat creatures and he wrote me back saying he liked my costume! How cool is he? I think I will print it and put it in the photoalbum next to the halloween pics when we get them...*

I haven't attatched the eyes yet, but this is it. It is a "rat creature" form the Bone comic books (highly recommend them, btw...)
Here is a phot of a "real' rat crature

some info on the p[ledge of allegiance

I keep getting theses weird e-mails trying to convert me to ignorance and right-wing agenda, so I looked up some info on why we should change the pledge to exclude the words "under God".
This is for anyone who believes that the pledge should not be changed beacause "under God" is what the "founders of our nation wanted to have in the Pledge." And the founders were dead by the time the pledge was written, by the way.

In 1892 Francis Bellamy wrote the pledge of allegiance: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to*) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.' He considered placing the word, 'equality,' in his Pledge, but knew that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans. [ * 'to' added in October, 1892. ]

The great sugar debacle Part I

For a little background, my son’s school is a charter school. It is also Montessori based as much as the state standards allow for freethinking in teaching. It is small; the entire student body for K-7 is usually about 65-70 kids. It is a co-op in which there is a decent amount of parent participation.
On the night of the first parent meeting at my son’s school, it was brought up that there is a hot lunch program. This program brings lunches to the school from McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Chinese fast food and KFC. This program also provides funding for the school in that we are charged a little over cost for the lunches. I stood up and asked if there was a way to offer healthy alternatives such as burritos or just about anything other than McDonalds. A veteran parent told me that the kids “love it and that I should not bad mouth what has been going on at that school for several years. No one else said anything. So the message I got was that I ma alone in my dislike of this sort of food and it’s encouragement among children. I should be quiet, if I don’t like the program, do participate.

For all you knitters...

Those wacky Germans...

Firsthand account of NO...

just HOW good do those folks at the astrodome have it?

Keep in mind this qoute when looking at the photos
...

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this [she chuckles slightly] is working very well for them." (former first lady B. Bush)

I love the filthy rich that run our country...

on a light note...

At least we aren't alone...

Lovely FEMA

Check this out:
pat robertson's

family and himself are the main board members for "operation blessing" Freaking government.

For mamaneen-carpet chemicals...

CPSC
And
The Environmental Health Clearinghouse

Not that you have this option, but I hate carpet so bad, we got rid of it entirely in our house and used the exsisting wood floors refinfished in water-based varnish. I really hate carpet. Nasty stuff. When we pulled ours up, we found about 1/4 inch of fine dust (think: human skin, dirt, germs, etc...) and mold all the way through the oak floor to the subflooring. so gross...
As for paint, you want to buy VOC-free paint. It doesn't cost any more than normal paint. Pittsburg Paints makes it (among others) and it works as good as any other paint. I have used it everytime since I found out about the chemicals...

My almost new front yard...

Our front yard was the bane on the neighborhood. The "before pic" does it little justice because there was a wonderful tree whose roots ahd grown up over the hard pan keeping water from staying in the yard and breaking up the side walk. This meant that in order to keep it green like in the before picture, the previous owners dumped hours worth of water into it. So the tree was removed and the sidewalk replaced. I could not water the yard with that much water and still feel good about how I was living and I hated mowing a freaking 4 foot tall hill so we stopped the water waste and yard was brown and weed covered and became the worst yard in the entire neigborhood, litterally. The pic doesn't really do it justice as it had 3 years to deteriorate after that photo. And you can't see the water-sucking slope very well...

while I slept.

While I have been buzzing along in my merry little world and my life is so good right now, the country and world have been falling apart.
The flooding in New Orleans, likely preventable by our government.
The fricking media and their coverage on looting in N.O.
The massive deaths of religious pilgtrams in Iraq, partially preventable by our gonverment (if they would get the heck OUT of there).
Now the NY times puts out an article that states "In all, 64 percent (of those polled) said they were open to the idea of teaching creationism in addition to evolution, while 38 percent favored replacing evolution with creationism."

the classic punk skirt

So I have been looking for a red plaid skirt like I used to ear in high school (yes, I am going thru a midlife crisis...)
I looked on line and found the nice ones were anywhere from $20-$50, used with shipping. Not worth it. So I check out all the local shops that have punk-like attire and am told that that style went out last year. (It was so hard not to say, "hmmm, I guess I was waaaay out of style when I wore one in 1985, then, huh?") So I go to the fabric shop thinking I wil just make one. Well the pattern alone is $13. Again, not worth it.
So I drop off a load of stuff at goodwill and go in to look for stuff for the kids. And lo and behold, I find a nice, thick, waaay too big red plaid skirt. I buy it for $4 and take it home, take out about 3 inches from the waist and about 12 inches from the length. Add some studs and grommets I have anyway and presto!

13 hour labor is LONG?!

I read placentamoms respose in a blog that labor was normal if under 12 hours. WTF? I have had the only first time labor under 20 hours of ANYONE I know. How can 12 hours be the limit on mormal? When DID that happen? I looked up to find some info on this and founf this site;
World health organisation
And, nicely enough, It makes NO mention of labor time. Too bad we have sloughed off our membership tot he rest of the world and gone on to do what is good for America...
Now, don't get me wrong, I am not knocking anyone who had a c-sec or some other medical intervention 'cause thier labor was long, I am just shocked to see that a medically "long" labor is 12 hours and one minute.

Speaking of plastic surgery...

My girl has an hemangioma (strawberyy mark) on her lower lip. It is a vascular birthmark that we were told will be gone when she is three. Well, she's almost four and while it is a tad smaller than last year, it is still prominent.
At birth it was huge. We had laser treatment to take out the glaring red and cortisone injections when she was only 6 months old as it was growing so rapidly at that point it was interfering with her nursing.
SO here is the delimma. I have met people from 19-over 40 years old who still have obvious hemangiomas. They NEVER went away.
She gets asked alot what happened to her lip, did she fall, ooo-what an owie. None of these thign really regitered to her until lately. I have noticed she tends to back up when peopel say anythign to her (or me) about it. Physically she takes a couple of steps back and closer to me. I am guessing she is becoming uncomfortable about it. We have doen eveything we could think of to make it a casual thign. Heck, when she was born and my oldest was but 3 1/2, HE would tell people it was a hemangioma, there was many a person who didn't want to admit they didn't know what that was because a 3 yo said it to them...

just thinking about this...

Why is it that we have all these freaking karate classes and self defense courses for girls and women and NO empathy/kindness courses for boys and men?

you have to read the reviews...

The book is of course lame an sad, but the reviews are hilarious!
Help! Mom! There are liberals under the bed!
Quick! before they take them down... the "liberals" come off as sounding very intelligent, and well thought out. The positive reviews however...

Tiny Showcase

The newest print is up. And they are now donating to the artist's choice of charity with every print. So the price went up $5 to a total of $20. But so worth it! This week is a great otter print from Carson Ellis...

sugar, yet again. warning-long but hopefully entertaining and educational

So I finished the paper I wanted to write to hand out at the next parent meeting. Can you guy look at it from a typical parent point fo view and tell me what you think?

If it is labeled “all natural, it’s good for you!
You can trust the ads when they say “natural, right? Wrong. Those “natural foods still contain sugar, high fructose corn syrup and other junk your body cannot properly digest. Heck, arsenic is natural and so is anthrax, but I sure as heck wouldn’t buy any to put on my cereal in the morning.
Let’s look at sugar. A few years ago, my family decided we had enough refined sugar and tried to cut it out of our diet. What we found was that there is sugar in everything. Mustard, catsup, bread, chips, juice. When something bragged it was sugar-free, it usually contained artificial sugar substitutes at worst and fruit juice concentrates at best. The labels are terribly misleading. Even foods marketed towards infants often contain sugar. Those little “fruit snacks you offer your children? Guess what one of the two main ingredients is? Yep, sugar, followed closely by corn syrup. This is a trick maunfaturers of foods use. If you break up the sugar into two different types, it will not appear as the first ingredient.

infidel tees?

Anyone else look at this site? Do they know where they are advertising?
Do they realise that loving america has little to do political parties or political alignments? Sheesh, take a little jump off the bush bandwagon and see howt he other folk in America live...
I love America, I have a strong dislike/distrust of our current president...

healthy snacks.

I am going to try to write a guideline for what parents should bring as a snack for my son'e school. The school is a small charter school for k thru 7th, so the snacks need to be good for all. Last year people brought donut holes, cookies and capri suns for snack (not birthday treats, snacks...). I feed my kids so stinkin well it is hard for me to watch my hard work (and it is work) go to ruin as I send him off to school.
So I have a bit about HFCS I worte awhile ago and I am going to add statistics and stuff to it coz people LOVE statistics. But telling people what not to bring only goes so far. It is much better to give them exapmles. So here is where you guys come in...
